What is a Healthy Living Pharmacy?

The Healthy Living Pharmacy (HLP) framework encourages pharmacies to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population and helps to reduce health inequalities within communities. 

The criteria for the HLP Level 1 self-assessment process have been developed by the Healthy Living Pharmacy Task Group of the Pharmacy and Public Health Forum, Public Health England.

The RSPH Level 2 Understanding Health Improvement for Healthy Living Pharmacies will allow you to gain the qualification and assessment you need to become a HLP in a way that works around your schedule.

Aims of the course

The aims of the Level 2 Understanding Health Improvement for Healthy Living Pharmacies are to give you an understanding of how to promote health and wellbeing and direct people towards further practical support.

On completition, you'll understand

  • the inequalities in health that develop and what the current policies are for addressing these
  • how effective communication can support health messages
  • ways to promote improvements in health and wellbeing to individuals
  • the impact of change on improving an individual's health and wellbeing

Who is the course aimed at?

The Level 2 Understanding Health Improvement for Healthy Living Pharmacies is essential for pharmacies who still need to register as Healthy Living Pharmacies. The qualification material will also teach you how to improve the health and wellbeing of people in you local community by motivating and encouraging them to make positive lifestyle choices.

The qualification is mapped to the National Occupational Standards and functions of the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (PHSKF) and Making Every Contact Count (MECC) guidelines.

How much does the course cost?

Qualification Assessment

The Assessment - Learners can complete the exam via eAssessment with RSPH Training solutions. Learners will need to have access to a computer with a webcam and microphone, and mobile phone with a camera. We are unable to invigilate via phone/video call on a mobile phone, due to assessment regulations. More information about eAssessment can be found here. If you do not have access to the above equipment you can contact our eLearning team to discuss alternative options.

Alternatively, pharmacies have the option to invigilate assessments in-house. Pharmacists will be responsible for supervising the assessment and making sure to comply with RSPH examination procedures. The invigilator must be a registered pharmacist or pharmacy technician on the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Register. However, please be aware that RSPH Training Solutions needs at least two weeks’ notice of any examination date.

How do you access the course? And how long does it take to complete?

All course materials are accessed through our interactive online platform RSPH Learn. (you need to be connected to the internet). The course topics are split out, with Revision Quizzes to test your knowledge, as you work through the modules. It can be paused and restarted whenever you like, and you have six months to complete the course.

The entire course involves up to eight hours of study. On successful completion, you'll receive an RSPH CPD Completion Certificate and eight CPD points.

 Course Contents

At the end of each section, you will find a revision quiz to help consolidate your learning. After completing the final topic, the Practice Assessment will help prepare you for the Level 2 Understanding Health Improvement qualification assessment, should you wish to take it. A digital handbook is available to download upon completion of the course.

PART 1: Health Inequalities
This topic explores the effects of health inequalities and the possible impact on local communities. Learners will be able to identify the factors leading to health inequalities and outline the policies and methodologies for reducing inequalities in health.

PART 2: Communication
The second topic introduces learners to the communication skills that are effective in communicating health messages, and why effective communication is vital in the promotion of health messages. Learners will be able to identify barriers to communication that may affect the understanding of health messages and strategies for overcoming these.

PART 3: Promotion of Health and Wellbeing
The third module introduces learners to the western scientific model and World Health Organisation definitions of the term health and wellbeing. Learners will be able to identify positive and negative influences on health and wellbeing, and provide examples of strategies and resources that can be used to promote health and wellbeing.

PART 4: Impact of Change
In the final topic, learners will gain knowledge of examples of behaviour change that can improve an individual’s health and wellbeing, and outline how individuals can be encouraged to change their behaviour.

Certification
