What is it?

This Level 2 qualification is designed to provide an understanding of public health pests and their management. It fulfils the legal requirement relating to the training of pest control technicians as set out in the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986.

The qualification was originally developed by RSPH to provide the underpinning knowledge required for the NVQ in Pest Control. It was restructured in 2000 to meet the requirements of qualifications accredited by the then Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), and redeveloped in 2004 in partnership with the British Pest Control Association.

The qualification is overseen by an advisory panel composed of staff from pest control companies, training organisations, servicing companies and trade associations to ensure that the objectives and content of the qualification remain appropriate for people wishing to enter the industry as pest control operatives.

The qualification is divided into three units (Vertebrate Pests, Invertebrate Pests and Health, Safety and Legal Aspects). The syllabus covers the management of rodents, non-rodent mammals, birds and invertebrates, health and safety and accident prevention, legislation and customer care.

This qualification is on The Education and Skills Funding Agency list of qualifications approved for funding. This funding will be withdrawn with effect from 1 August 2021.

Who is it for?

While not intended exclusively for people working in pest management, candidates who are, or are intending to be, so employed will be better equipped to carry out their professional duties safely, efficiently and humanely.
