The ACE coordinators are at the forefront of shaping a trauma informed work-force with police and key partners. The ACE coordinators deliver training, embed learning and facilitate change. They offer ongoing consultancy and advice to police officers and key partners.
The ACE coordinators build strong relationships operationally across ranks and with key partners locally and nationally, to influence change and support strategic work. They do not work directly with families however, the work they accomplish will have a direct impact on individuals at risk of experiencing ACEs.
The ACE TIME training programme provides information about ACEs to increase knowledge and understanding to inform practice. Training participants will gain an understanding of:
- What ACEs are and the prevalence of ACEs within the Welsh population
- How ACEs impact life outcomes and how the risk of poor outcomes in later life increase with the number of ACEs
- Wider impact of ACEs on society (i.e. use of health service, crime), appreciating that addressing ACEs is everyone’s business, not the responsibility of particular organisations
- An understanding of their own and other people's psychological and physiological reactions to threats, recognising that many of them are involuntary
- Information on how to apply knowledge of trauma to their role and recognise trauma in vulnerable people they work with
- An understanding that a person’s behaviour can have an underlying cause and can be a symptom of trauma. Through this improved understanding, learners will better identify the root cause of behaviour rather than just focus on the behaviour, which will contribute to creating a sustainable holistic problem-solving approach with families, rather than a transient, symptom behaviour-based response
- Enable learners to recognise the benefits of early intervention and therefore seek support and advice on intervention prior to individuals reaching safeguarding requirements. Intervening at the earliest opportunity creates positive outcomes for the individual as well as a reduction in resource and associated costs for the workforce as a whole-system benefit
