The Health Equity Award was a category in the Health & Wellbeing Awards 2021 and 2022.
Health Equity is defined by the WHO as “the absence of avoidable or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically, or geographically”. Essentially, it is about everyone having a fair opportunity to be healthy or as healthy as possible. In this category, we will be looking for evidence that a programme has increased health equity.
Award Criteria
- We want to see interventions that reduced health inequalities, overcoming the barriers to achieving better health in defined populations. Populations are likely to be defined in terms of the health inequality and those who have systematically experienced greater obstacles to health based on their demographic, socio-economic, geographical or other characteristics historically linked to discrimination or exclusion
- What we will be looking for is clear evidence that a specific health inequality was understood and addressed - and that this had a positive impact on the health of the group and therefore made a contribution to health equity
- To achieve a shortlisting in this category, the application must demonstrate a clear understanding of the health inequality and a clear definition of which group experienced it. Interventions will have been designed to increase health equity and evaluation of the impact of these approaches will be central to the application. We would hope that the application describes how the work might be replicated and or scaled
- We welcome applications that address discrete populations and understand that these may sometimes extend to a small number of beneficiaries. Of course, as with all our awards, we would expect to see inclusion and coproduction embedded in your approach.
