RSPH is delighted with the results of Wednesday’s vote in the European Parliament but urges the EU Commission to act swiftly and implement measures that are being called for by the public and politicians alike.

The vote by MEPs called for the EU Commission to come up with a new alcohol strategy and contains a call for a law to display calorie content on alcoholic drinks to be brought forward by the end of 2016, a measure the RSPH have been campaigning for since October 2014.

The EU Commission is now under substantial pressure from politicians and public health campaigners to bring forward new laws without delay.

Shirley Cramer CBE, Chief Executive of RSPH, said: “While we are pleased with Wednesday’s outcome, we must keep the spotlight on this issue and apply pressure on the Commission to ensure the measures are followed through as quickly as possible.

Our research has demonstrated the appetite that exists among consumers for labelling to be introduced and it is imperative the Commission act swiftly to bring forward these new measures.
