The Division of Nursing at the University of Nottingham began delivering the RSPH [Royal Society for Public Health] Level 2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement in September 2009.
The courses will be run by experienced and dedicated staff with a background in health promotion and workplace wellness. The course is intended to be multidisciplinary and encourage interprofessional working. It will initially be aimed at both pre-qualified healthcare students from the University of Nottingham (in the first instance, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy and medicine), and qualified NHS staff of any occupational role from Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust. Many of the participants on the first course will be our current workplace health champions for Q-active at NUH Trust or student health champions from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the university. They will be able to use their learning from the course immediately in practice as they promote healthy lifestyle choices amongst their colleagues and peers as part of established workplace wellness programmes for staff and students. We have offered some funded places for students, our healthcare professionals of the future, and we hope this course will support them in their activities as ‘role models’ for health pre and post qualification [RSPH training and courses lead to qualifications!].
We plan to continue delivering this course as demand has been high. The level 2 award will be advertised on the University website and also on the NUH Trust Q-active website. We are currently seeking funding to develop an e-learning version of the course to increase flexibility and widen access to this award.
